It can be a mechanical device that is constructed from metal and shaped to fit in the palm of your hand comfortably and neatly. Inside the tally counter will be rings that have numbers on them. The majority have 4 rings that allow the counter to count up to 9999 before resetting and beginning again. To ensure that the device remains securely in the hand it will be fitted with a metal ring in which a finger can slide through thus securing the device to the hand. To work this kind of tally counter the user simply pushes a button every time he or she wishes to add 1 to the count they are keeping. Every time the button is pushed the count increases and the total count is displayed numerically through a display that is easily read.
With technology the digital tally counter has emerged. These are counters that work in the same way as the counter mentioned earlier. The user presses a button every time they wish to add to a kept count and the device will add to the total. The digital versions of the counter are battery operated and usually made of plastic. They display their counts in digital form on a LCD screen. As to whether they are a better version of the tally counter is up to debate and personal preference. The old style counters rarely break whereas the digital versions are battery operated and there is always the possibility of battery failure during a count. Also a digital display can be difficult to read in sunlight. Personally I prefer the "old fashioned" mechanical versions. To me they are more accurate and reliable.
