Extreme temperatures are a grave concern for electronic devices. Most units are built to withstand temperatures between 32F - 140F. Cars heat up because of solar radiation coming through the windows, so leaving the GPS in the car in summer is not advised. The trunk might be a better choice, but then the theft issues again become a concern. Thieves often stand in the shadows to watch for those who place things in the trunk. As soon as the owner leaves, break the trunk open and steal whatever they can.
Consumers have reported screen issues, cracked LCD (touch) screens, inaccurate locations and speed, and battery issues when the GPS has been exposed to extreme temperatures. Keep the system dry, out of direct sunlight, and insulated from the cold.
Batteries and heat are not the best of friends. Some units do not have removable batteries, so again - taking the unit with you is a good choice. Some report that their batteries won't charge when the unit is left in the hot sun. Permanent GPS units are different, in that they are built to withstand extreme temperatures, and they do not run off of Lithium Ion batteries.
